Warning Signs of Mole

These are pictures of normal moles.Usually black or brown in colour.Flat or raised.Hair can grow on it.Symmetrical in shape, with regular border and single colour throughout.

Mole or naevus is a very common skin abnormality among people all over the world.Generally it is a benign growth, which is harmless and doesn’t require much attention, other than for cosmetic reason. It can be flat or raised above the skin.
Mole can be present in any parts of the body, where there is melanocyte (pigment producing cell). This melanocyte produces melanin,a pigment which gives brown or dark color. Mole occurs due to excess deposition of melanin in some parts of the body.

Eventhough it is harmless, you must be aware of any changes with the pre-existing mole you have, because it can turn to cancer.Cancer which arising from mole is called Malignant Melanoma. It occurs elsewhere in your body, not only in the skin. There are few warning signs of mole which can be easily remembered by a mnemonic ‘ABCDE’.

Pictures:In malignant melanoma, the moles have asymmetrical shape, irregular border, vary in colour, larger diameter, some bleeds and may show skin changes.

ABCDE of Malignant Melanoma

A)Asymmetry -shape is asymmetry
B)Border –border is ragged or irregular
C)Colour-multiple or variety in colour throughout
D)Diameter –more than 6mm in diameter is suspicious
E)Enlarging-if it continues to enlarge

Other than these ABCDE's,you may suspect something wrong with your mole if it bleeds, causes itching, pain or any skin changes around it.
